Welcome to the official city of Vandalia, Illinois web site! Our city's history goes back to the state's inception. Vandalia, Illinois is the oldest existing Capitol city which served the State of Illinois for 20 years, from 1819-1839.
Today, the city with a current population of 6585 is a blend of beautifully restored historical sites and stately homes of the past. Vandalia is also enhanced with antique and specialty shops, beautiful churches, modern hospital and

Vandalia Illinois is located along the banks of the Kaskaskia river in south central Illinois, just 70 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri along Interstate 70, at exits #61 and #63 and also intersects US Route 51.

Visit more sites including The Little Brick House which has six restored rooms filled with china, furniture, engravings and books that belonged to settlers when Abraham Lincoln attended the legislature (1834-1839). The Old State Cemetery's bronze markers offer biographical information on prominent citizens in the early history of our community. The Tribute to Farmers Monument is an impressive, black granite piece located on the grounds of Vandalia's Tourist Information Center near the intersection of I-70 and Route 51.
